Detail : The Beatles Greatest Hits.

Marketing ploy ? ... Re-issue Overkill ?
Although we have only just had the Anthology book, and it seems that there have been a steady stream of recent releases (Anthology I, II, and III, Past Masters I and II, Live at the BBC, etc) ... there have NOT been as many Beatles compilations in recent times as you may think ! ... In fact this is the FIRST on one C.D.
The only previous single-disc set of Beatles hits was the 20 Greatest Hits T.V. advertised album of eighteen years ago, in the happy days before C.D.'s !

In the past, NO compilation of The Beatles had EVER reached No.1 in the U.K. not even the Red and Blue albums ... a strange fact indeed !! ... but this release entered the chart at number 1 !!
In the first week it sold 319,126 (which was a record sales for one single week in the year 2000 !) ...
and in the second week it had sales of over a quarter of a million, making total sales (in the first two weeks) of ...
OVER 572,500 units.

This is their 15th Number 1 album and
Brings the total of weeks at number 1 to 175 weeks ... and another record ...
It was the first album to stay at the number 1 slot for 9 weeks running, for almost TEN years (the last being The Eurythmics greatest hits)
January 21st 2001, it was knocked off the top slot by the band "Texas", with their greatest hits release and moved down to number 3.

No idea why, but in May 2009 the "1" album again re-entered the chart. I may have missed it's re-appearance, but here's what I know ... 17/05/2009 - 44th known week in the chart, now listed as being at number 43.

Again "1" re-appeared in the chart ...
16/08/2009 - from 116 to number 99 (outside the Top 75 doesn't count for chart longevity purposes).

On 11th February, 2008 The Beatles went to the top of the European sales charts for the last decade, winning a ninth prestigious IFPI Platinum Europe Award for their greatest hits album 1.

The tracks listed below, are selected straightforwardly, being all the number ones of Britain and the U.S.

The C.D. comes with a 32 page booklet which has a foreword by George Martin, and a page of picture covers for each of the singles. I have shown a couple of pages as samples, below.
The cover is very simplistic, being a pop-art yellow (submarine coloured) number one, on a background of red (strawberry colour !)

09/09/09 (Number Nine, Number Nine, Number Nine) - the album was NOT re-released as part of the Beatles In Stereo Remasters collection.
But all the media excitement caused the album to re-appear in the charts.
6th September 2009 it showed and number 99 (outside the Top 75 doesn't count for chart longevity purposes)
13th September 2009 it re-entered the chart again at number 54 in the fourteenth highest position of SEVENTEEN chart positions The Beatles captured in one amazing week.
(see the box set detail for the chart position of all 17 titles together)
20th September 2009 - dropped twenty-seven places back out the official chart to number 83.
27th September 2009 - dropped out of the Top 100 completely.
