THE SILKIE

The Silkie were England's answer to American folk groups like Peter, Paul and Mary. Managed by Brian Epstein. John, Paul and George helped The Silkie record their version of You've Got To Hide Your Love Away at about the same time as The Beatles own version was being released on their soundtrack album Help !. John did most of the producing while Paul played guitar, and George kept time by tapping the guitar and playing tambourine. Some sources also list Paul as co-producer and George as helping on the arrangement, but no doubt it was primarily John's production.

The track was recorded on 9th August 1965 at the IBC Studios.

The Silkie were a group of students from Hull university :
Sylvia Tatler - Vocals
Mike Ramsden - Guitar and vocals
Ivor Aylesbury - Guitar and vocals
Kevin Cunningham - Double bass.
They had already had a single release in June 1965 called "Blood Red Door" which had failed to chart, but once the strength of the Beatles got behind them, plus of course a very strong song anyway, they had their only chart hit.
Two further single releases in 1966 failed to breach the chart.
