A live album reflecting music performed during Paul's 1989-1990 World Tour ... except, it actually includes some tracks that were NOT actually performed during the concerts. As marked below, these were mostly recorded at soundchecks.

The Paul McCartney World Tour opened on 26th September 1989 at the Drammenshallen, Oslo, Norway and ended 10 months later at Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois. During that time Paul McCartney and his band travelled 100,330 miles, visited Norway, Sweden, West Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Japan and Brazil, and played 102 concerts to 2,742,000 people. New attendance records were set at Wembley Arena, London; Texas Stadium, Dallas; The Sun Devil Stadium, Phoenix; The Cyclone Stadium, Ames, Iowa; The Municipal Stadium, Cleveland and The Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California. The tour was voted "International Tour Of The Year" by Performance Magazine, the concert trade newspaper.

On 21st April 1990 at his second show at the Maracana Stadium, Rio De Janeiro, 184,000 Brazilians turned out to celebrate Paul McCartney's first visit to their country and set the new official World Record for the biggest stadium concert in the history of rock 'n' roll.
(By comparison, it took 11 nights at the Wembley Arena, London for 138,000 people to see Paul)

The live track, "C Moon" is recorded 27th October 1989 at Palatrussardi in Milan and is released on the single "All My Trials" on 3rd December 1990.
Live tracks "Let 'Em In" recorded at the Tokyo Dome, 5th March 1990, plus "P.S. Love Me Do" recorded 21st April 1990 at the Macarana Stadium, Rio are released with the "Birthday" single.
A live version of "Mull Of Kintyre" is recorded 23rd June 1990 at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, this is released on the "All My Trials" single.
The live "Lennon Medley" that Paul performs at Kings Dock, Liverpool on 28th June 1990 also appears on a version of the "All My Trials" single.
A live version of "Good Day Sunshine" is recorded as Knebworth on 30th June 1990, this appears on a release of the "Birthday" single.

The triple album is housed in a single sleeve that has room for three L.P.'s and a glossy free booklet. Each album has a different image on the front as seen above, with the rear being plain mauve with the track listing for that record. The 28 page 11 1/4" X 11 1/4" glossy colour booklet, gives the dates and places of each recording used for this release, together with some terrific colour photographs, one of which can be seen above.
The sleeve design was by Peter Saville Associates, with art direction by Peter Saville.
The cover photographs were by David Christie.
The booklet photographs were by David Christie, Jorie Gracen, Shoichiro Kataoka, Ross Halfin, Alan Silfen and Guido Harari.

Tripping The Live Fantastic: Highlights
Two weeks after the triple album release, a condensed single C.D. version was released with the title of "Tripping The Live Fantastic: Highlights" on catalogue number CDPCSD 114 (+ cassette TCPCSD 114). The U.K. version of this release added one track not found on the triple album, which was "All My Trials" recorded 27th October 1989 in Milan. The "Highlights" were also planned for vinyl issue (PCSD 114), but was reportedly cancelled, making this (almost) irrelevant release unique as it was Paul's first album NOT to be released on vinyl in this country.
In saying that though, the catalogue still lists the vinyl release, AND lists the tracks which were on the C.D. but NOT on the vinyl.

See after the vinyl listing for the Highlights track list

"Just got back from the world tour and this is being written shortly after.

From Rio to Glasgow, Tokyo through most everywhere and back again, this album captures some of the sounds of those nights on tour - when 'Spaceman' ran the red flag up, Curtis pushed the rig out and together with more than 100 others they staged the show.

"Showtime" was the call and the shuffle through halls to backstage rituals nightly served to energise this merry band.

And at soundchecks we played old songs from memory or made up pieces to keep ourselves amused. These "trinkets" are sprinkled throughout the album and hopefully convey a certain good humour.

We saw fans with messages replying to our own ... we saw emotions and we saw hope for the future ... couples necking ... grown men crying ... children far too young to know ... and we played for all of them."

Paul McCartney, August 1990
